INT.  LIVING ROOM

Holly sits in a chair reading a magazine.  Little Jasmine, a
six-year old, sits on the floor with a doll.

                                JASMINE
                      You ever done this before?

                                HOLLY
                      What?

                                JASMINE
                      Babysit.

                                HOLLY
                      Yes.

                                JASMINE
I don’t think you’re very good at it.

                                HOLLY
I don’t care what you think, kid.  I keep
you out of trouble and I get paid.  End
                      of story.

                                JASMINE
My name is not kid; it’s Jasmine.

                                HOLLY
Yeah, well, you’re kid to me.

                                JASMINE
                      I think you’re ugly.

                                HOLLY
                          (sarcastic)
Boy, that hurts coming from you.

                                JASMINE
                      I think you’re mean.

Holly just throws Jasmine a look.

                                JASMINE
                      I think…I think you’re a lesbian.

                                HOLLY
                      Excuse me?

                                JASMINE
That’s what I’m going to tell my mommy
                      and daddy.

                                HOLLY
You don’t even know what a lesbian is.

                                JASMINE
I’m going to tell my mommy and daddy that
                      you tried to touch me.

                                HOLLY
If you don’t shut your mouth, I’ll more
than just touch you.  Got that?

                                JASMINE
What are you saying?  That you’ll hit me?
Are you going to hit me?

                                HOLLY
Why don’t you put on the Lion King and
                      leave me alone, OK?

                                JASMINE
If you hit me, I’ll have a hurt mark and
then mommy and daddy will sue you.

                                HOLLY
                      They may just applaud me.

                                JASMINE
                      What’s applaud mean?

                                HOLLY
                      Clap.  Cheer.  Rah  Rah.

                                JASMINE
Will they cheer when I tell them you
                      tried to kiss me?

                                HOLLY
What are you, the kid from hell?

                                JASMINE
You threaten to hit me, now you’re
insulting me.  I don’t think mommy and
                      daddy will have you back.

                                HOLLY
                      Thank god for small favors.

Jasmine screams.  This lasts a long moment.  Then she stops.
            And then she smiles.

                                HOLLY
                      What are you doing?

                                JASMINE
                      I’m rehearsing.

                                HOLLY
OK, kid…you’re now starting to get on
my nerves.  If you don’t shut your
goddamn mouth, I’m going to rip your
                      tongue out.

Jasmine reaches for the telephone.  She picks up the handset
            and punches in three numbers.

                                HOLLY
                      What are you doing?

                                JASMINE
                      I’m calling 911.

Holly rushes over to the phone, slams it down and grabs
            Jasmine by her neck.

                                HOLLY
You little shit.  I have had enough of
you.  You make one more sound, I swear
                      I’ll…I’ll…

Holly is lost for words.  Holly throws her down and goes back
            to her chair.

                                JASMINE
You weren’t supposed to do that.  I was
supposed to call 911 and the police were
supposed to come and arrest you and then
mommy and daddy were supposed to come
home and hug me and promise me anything I
want.  That’s the way it happened the
other night on tv.  That’s the way it
happened on tv.  I don’t understand.

                                HOLLY
                      I don’t watch tv.

                                JASMINE
You don’t watch tv?  No wonder you’re so
                      weird.

            Holly throws Jasmine a look.

                                                                THE END.
